Stop the Slice

When I ask my students why their ball slices I usually get a variety of answers. The most important reason a golf ball slices is that the clubface was open at impact. One of the prime reasons for an open clubface is the fact that the golfer wasn't even trying to close it through impact.

Picture 1 shows a typical problem for slicers of the golf ball. It shows a golfer who is trying to hold the clubface square to the target long after impact. While this may make sense, it will never work. For the clubface to return to a square position at impact, it must be swung from an open position before impact, to a closed position after impact (picture 2). While it will take some time to learn when to close the clubface, it is vital that you are trying to close it; otherwise, you will slice the ball for the rest of your life.
